McKenzie Lake is a suburban neighbourhood in southeast Calgary, Alberta. The community was in development from the mid-1980s through to present. The area is bordered by Deerfoot Trail on the east, Highway 22X (Marquis of Lorne) on the south, Fish Creek Provincial Park on the west, and 130th Ave SE on the north. The community is most known for its private lake and island in the centre of the community. Multi-million dollar homes can be seen alined both the ridge and the lake.
The original community of McKenzie was built in 1984 south of Stonegate. During the mid 1990s, when town of Midnapore was annexed into the city of Calgary proper, interest in city's deep south began to peak. McKenzie Lake developed as an expansion of the former McKenzie community after an artificial lake was produced in response to the popularity of similar amenities in communities such as Lake Bonavista.
The community was expanded again in 1997 when Legacy Ridge was developed in a belt of agriculture land that separated McKenzie from McKenzie Lake, thus unifying the two areas.
McKenzie Lake’s community association offers a variety of programs to residents. Scouting programs, community based youth baseball, soccer and hockey programs, dance classes, martial arts, exercise classes, church group, Kumon math and drop in men’s basketball are just a few of the programs that are offered through the community association. Preschool and afterschool programs are also offered. One of McKenzie Lake’s more innovative programs is a youth justice council that seeks to give young offenders a second chance. The community’s outdoor skating rink is popular during winter months, as are special events such as jellybean dances, New Year’s and Children’s Christmas parties. It should be noted that not all residents in the community boundaries have access to the lake. The lake access boundary is different than the community boundary and ends just south of the Mountain Park school property line. The lake is run by the McKenzie Lake Resident Association a separately incorporated non-profit.
This neighborhood includes two public schools: McKenzie Lake Elementary School and Mountain Park Middle School; and one separate school, Cardinal Newman School (K-9).
