Lake Chaparral was established in 1995 and is located in the south east sector of Calgary. It is located at the southern edge of the city, south of the Marquis de Lorne Trail. To the east it is bordered by the Bow River Valley, to the south by 194 Avenue SE, and to the west by Macleod Trail.
Chaparral's main calling card is a 32 acre man-made lake and a 21-acre park with two waterfalls, a recreation centre with a full-time director, and facilities for fishing, boating, skating and diving. These amenities are available to homeowners for a fee paid to a Resident's Association who operate the facility.

Shopping for the area is north up Macleod Trail in Midnapore and Shawnessy, complete with a "Coliseum style" movie multiplex. The largest area shopping centre is Southcentre Mall.
